Study details & methodology

Name
“Washington State Healthy Youth Survey 2025”
State
“Public schools—including charter and Tribal schools-- in Washington State schools that enroll students in grades 6 , 8, 10, and 12 are invited to register for the HYS.”

Washington State, United States.

Publication year
“July 2026”

Publication year 2026; survey wave 2025.

Sample size
“A total of 165 schools and 28,683 students contributed data to the statewide sample.”

28,683 respondents from 165 schools in the statewide random sample. Results from 184,955 additional students in non-sampled schools are excluded. The online-harm questions were asked to subsets of grades 8, 10 and 12; the total also includes grade 6.

Age range
“The findings of HYS 2025 presented in this report are based on the responses of 28,683 students in Grades 6, 8, 10, and 12.”

Grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 in the statewide report. The online-harm questions use the secondary questionnaire for grades 8, 10 and 12.

Sampling
“For the statewide sample, Department of Health epidemiology staff drew three simple random samples of all public schools serving Grade 6, Grade 8, and Grades 10 and 12 together.”

Probability school sample. Non-sampled schools are excluded from statewide results.

Harms measured

Bullying
“The next questions ask about bullying. These questions may cause strong emotions. Remember, you can skip any question you want, and no one will know how you answered.…” “In the past 30 days, how often have you been bullied by someone using social media, a phone, or video games?”Response options: I have not been bullied. / Once / 2 - 3 times / About once a week / Several times a week

Grades 8, 10 and 12. This question is in a randomly assigned question bank, so its respondent count is smaller than the full statewide sample.

Problematic Use
“How often do you:…” “Experience increased social anxiety due to your Internet use.”“Feel withdrawal when away from the Internet.”“Lose motivation to do other things that need to get done because of the Internet.”Response options: Never / Rarely / Sometimes / Often / Very often

Grades 8, 10 and 12. The three-item Problematic and Risky Internet Use Screening Scale (PRIUSS-3) measures internet-related social anxiety, withdrawal and lost motivation. The matrix is in the Mental Health Bank, which randomly assigns four of eight questions; it is not asked of the entire statewide sample.

Offline or broader-context measurement

Bullying
“The next question asks about bullying. This question may cause strong emotions. Remember, you can skip any question you want, and no one will know how you answered. “Bullying” is when one or more students threaten, spread rumors about, hit, shove, or otherwise hurt another student over and over again. It is not bullying when two students of about the same strength or power argue or fight or tease each other in a friendly way.…” “In the last 30 days, how often have you been bullied?”Response options: I have not been bullied. / Once / 2 - 3 times / About once a week / Several times a week

General bullying question that includes in-person experiences without excluding online incidents. Asked in grades 8, 10 and 12 (secondary instrument, p. 29) and grade 6 (elementary instrument, p. 18).
