Actionable data for youth online safety
The Youth Online Safety Index (YOSI) brings together population-level surveys of youth online harms. Our goal is to make these data easier to find, understand, and use.
Why does measurement matter?
For decades, we’ve used consistent risk data to improve school, workplace, and car safety. Online safety needs the same approach: what are the risks of harm, how do they vary by app, and how are they trending?
Platforms, policymakers, and civil society groups can set measurable goals and identify what is working vs. what is not.
Youth and parents can make more informed, risk-aware choices about which apps to use and how.
What harms and risk factors do we cover?
- Conduct and contact harms, such as bullying, unwanted contact, and non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII)
- Content harms, such as exposure to self-harm, eating disorder, or violent content
- Problematic use, such as lost sleep or difficulty controlling time online
- Underage Use (Risk Factor): usage of apps by children younger than allowed by policy or law
